Volunteering at Carolina Tiger Rescue (Pittsboro, NC)
I have always been an animal lover. I know, that sounds like any typical annoying girl - crying at the Sarah McLaughlin animal commercials, making excursions exclusively for the purpose of finding animals to pet and play with, falling in love with random dogs and cats (okay, as I type this, I'm thinking maybe I'm a bit more weird than I thought).. But I love them. If I wasn't such so sensitive to suffering animals or so traumatized from my semester-long delve into the Pre-Medicine world, I would probably be a veterinarian. But, unfortunately, I am both of those things, so I am not.
When a sorority sister posted the list of Serve Beyond Cincinnati trips to apply for in our Facebook group, I was a little wary. I'm a shy person - going on a week long spring break trip with strangers was more terrifying to me than exciting. After seeing the trip to Carolina Tiger Rescue, a proclaimed volunteer trip to a tiger sanctuary without much description on what we would be doing, and hearing of a few sisters applying, my heart told me I had to go (because BIG. FLUFFY. CUTE. CATS.). Along with applying to attend the trip in general, I also applied to be a Trip Leader. I thought it would be a great way to get my name out in the Serve Beyond Cincinnati organization, and as a leader. About a month later, I found out that I, along with another girl, had been appointed as the Trip Leader. After a few stressful months of very unorganized planning, spring break finally arrived, and our group was off to Pittsboro, North Carolina. There are far too many experiences and amazing things that happened on the trip to write them all down, but to summarize my trip, I have included the review of it I did for my Applied Community and Civic Engagement class.
